Bustos Dam gates in Bulacan opened to release water

BUSTOS, Bulacan — Two gates of the Bustos Dam here were opened Monday night in anticipation of heavy rains from Typhoon Rosita (Yutu), which is now traversing the northern and central parts of Luzon.

Dam officials ordered the opening of the dam’s gates as a precautionary measure to prevent the accumulation of too much water.

On Monday, water elevation at the Bustos Dam was monitored at 17.05 meters, just a third of a meter short of the its spilling level of 17.34 meters.

Alfred dela Cruz, gatekeeper of Bustos Dam, said on Monday night, two of the dam’s spill gates were raised at half a meter each.

Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, dela Cruz said that it was again raised half a meter each.

Raul Agustin of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of Bulacan said Bustos Dam’s south Sluice Gates 1 and 2 opening were lowered to half a meter opening, as its water elevation reached 16.92 meters.

Meanwhile, water elevations in Angat and Ipo Dams as of 8 a.m. were monitored at 203.17 meters and 101.03 meters, respectively. The normal high water levels there are 212.00 meters and 101.00 meters, respectively.

As of Tuesday morning, light rains spawned by “Rosita” were all over the province of Bulacan. (Manny Balbin/PNA)
