Cagayan Region preps for Typhoon Bising, Magat Dam to release water

Cagayan Valley is now bracing for the possible impact of Typhoon Bising, despite a small chance of landfall.

According to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Director Harold Cabreros, all local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (DRRMC) have been advised to prepare all resources in case rescue and evacuation operations will be required.

All local government units have also been instructed to prepare facilities that will serve as evacuation centers, which will be separate from facilities being used for COVID-19 patients.

“The typhoon will not hit our landmass. Kaya lang, malakas pa rin ang hatid na hangin at ulan, kaya po ‘yung ating coastal areas ay naabisuhan na sila nitong pagdating ng bagyong Bising [However, it will still bring strong winds and heavy rain, that is why coastal areas have been advised about Typhoon Bising],” Cabreros said.

Fishing vessels are temporarily prohibited from sailing in water bodies covered by Region 2, especially in the eastern and northern parts.

Meanwhile, the National Irrigation Administration – Magat River Integrated Irrigation System (MARIIS) announced it will open one spillway gate of the dam tomorrow, April 20. – Report from Oliver Baccay/PIA Cagayan/AG-jlo
