Cebu City mayor favors MGCQ for next month’s quarantine

Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella is inclined to place turf under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) starting September 1 after the reported flattening of its COVID-19 curve.

Data from the Department of Health (DOH) Region 7 show that there are 626 active out of the 9,565 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 8,298 recoveries, and 641 deaths in the city.

In case the city downgrades its classification to MGCQ, some restrictions will remain, including the closure of movie theaters and ban on concerts.

“It should be maintained, that’s why I consider this as a challenge. Let us not be complacent. Hindi ito dapat na ipagmayabang (We should not be boastful about it),” Labella stated.

“On the other hand, we can serve this as a challenge to work harder to do better, so that we can totally eliminate a possible, reduce a great extent the infection of the virus,” he added.

Labella disclosed that a small number of patients are currently staying in schools converted as isolation centers for asymptomatic patients. He shared that many quarantine facilities in the city are almost out of COVID-19 patients following the reported recoveries of hundreds of patients. The decision of the Inter-Agency Task Force on the community quarantine classification of Cebu City is currently being anticipated. – Report from John Aroa
