Cebu implements ‘no segregation, no collection’ of garbage

CEBU CITY — The Cebu City government began the strict implementation of its policy on the “No Segregation, No Collection” of garbage on Thursday.

Greggy Senados of the Cebu City Public Information Office said the city implemented the policy in its effort to speed up garbage collection in the metropolis.

The strict implementation is also pursuant to Republic Act No. 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2010, and City Ordinance No. 2031, or the Solid Waste Segregation at Source, added Senados.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña earlier issued a memorandum directing all barangays and department heads to strictly enforce the “no segregation, no collection” of solid waste policy starting March 1.

According to Senados, the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO) also began its intensive information and education campaign on solid waste management in the different barangays on Thursday.

Former City Councilor Ma. Nida Cabrera, who now heads CCENRO, said that unsegregated garbage would not be collected and those who are disposing mixed waste shall be penalized.

“I urge everyone to cooperate and do their share in taking care of our environment by segregating their garbage at home,” Cabrera said.

Biodegradable wastes will be collected every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, while non-biodegradables will be collected on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. (PNA)
