Cebu LGUs advised to watch out for landslides

CEBU CITY — The Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has advised some local government units (LGU) to monitor their mountainsides for possible landslides as Cebu is currently experiencing occasional rain showers.

Cebu PDRRMO executive assistant and spokesperson Jules Regner said in an interview on Tuesday that some of the province’s hilly lands have already cracked due to the mild El Niño, and scattered rain showers or a heavy downpour would likely loosen the cracked soil and may cause landslide.

“We have advised the LGUs concerned to constantly check their mountainsides as we have occasional rains since Monday,” Regner said in Cebuano.

He said there are areas in at least six municipalities in the province where landslide may possibly occur should scattered rains continue until the next few days.

Regner said these areas are located in the towns of Alegria, Boljoon, Ginatilan, Malabuyoc, Pinamungajan, and San Remegio.

Municipal disaster officers have to monitor these areas, especially those with houses or people residing on the mountainsides, he said.

Earlier, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration announced that Cebu and other parts of the Visayas will experience occasional rains for some days this week due to the cluster of clouds in Mindanao and the easterlies.
