Child laborers perish in Northern Samar landslide

TACLOBAN CITY — Two minors died after being trapped in a landslide that hit a construction site inside an elementary school campus in Lavezares, Northern Samar Wednesday afternoon.

The victims were identified as Jonnel Nabor and Elmer Abayon, both 17 years old and residents of Kalabog village, Victoria, Northern Samar.

Based on initial report released by police regional headquarters spokesperson, Chief Insp. Ma.Bella Rentuaya, the victims were working to build classrooms inside Libas Elementary School in Libas village in Lavezares town when the landslide occurred around 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Experts said the downpour might have triggered the landslide that hit the construction site located near a hill.

The victims died after being covered by tons of loose soil and boulders. It took several hours for rescuers to retrieve their bodies. (PNA)
