China tags 2016 arbitration ruling as ‘illegal’ and ‘invalid’

China has junked the call for compliance to the 2016 arbitration ruling that nullifies its claim on a huge part of the South China Sea.

The Embassy of Beijing in the Philippines has stated that China does not acknowledge the arbitration ruling and has called it “illegal” and “invalid”. The statement also pointed out that China has not accepted and engaged in the arbitration as well as the award.

China has also reminded that the Philippines and China have allegedly agreed to respond to the arbitration case which paved the way to a strengthened bilateral relation between the two.

Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. has asked on Sunday for the compliance of China with the said ruling in celebration of the award’s 4th anniversary.
