Clark airport heightens security after Basilan blast

CLARK, Pampanga — The Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) on Thursday heightened its security measures at the civil aviation complex following Tuesday’s bombing incident in Lamitan, Basilan that killed 10 people.

CIAC president Alexander Cauguiran said the enhanced security condition or Security Condition Level 2 is being implemented at the airport and its premises upon the directive of Secretary Arthur Tugade of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) .

He said that Tugade ordered heads of DOTr sectors and attached agencies to heighten security in all airports, seaports, railways, road transport terminals, and to issue alert protocols in the wake of the Basilan blast.

“Flight operations are not affected and the (security) enhancement is our proactive approach to ensuring public safety,” he said.

On top of their daily strict routine, Cauguiran said he has directed airport ground personnel to boost security measures 24/7.

The airport chief said that all vehicles and individuals passing through airport premises will be subjected to full inspection, including thorough screening of car trunks, baggage and cargo.

“Roving security agents will also be deployed inside the passenger terminal building and the aviation complex,” Cauguiran said.

He added that the CIAC is closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Command and other law enforcement units in manning the airport gates and the airside area.  (Marna Dagumboy Del Rosario/PNA)
