Classes remain suspended in 2 Antique towns

SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique — Classes in all levels are still suspended in two municipalities of Antique province on Tuesday due to the enhanced southwest monsoon rains.

Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Broderick Train said schools remain closed in the coastal towns of Laua-an and Libertad as they are flood-prone.

“All the other schools in other towns have resumed their classes Tuesday,” Train said.

Meanwhile, he said his office has monitored drowning incidents last July 8.

Edgar M. Bandiola, a 52-year-old carpenter from Barangay Paliwan, Bugasong, and his wife Emileta were en route to Bugasong from San Pedro, San Jose de Buenavista on board a motor banca when their vessel was hit by strong waves and capsized 50 meters from the shoreline in the town of Belison.

“The couple was rushed to the Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital in San Jose de Buenavista after they were rescued but then the husband was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician,” Train said.

He advised the public to be vigilant, especially if they live in areas that are prone to landslides and floods.

“The soil is now saturated with rainwater that landslide could happen,” he said.

Train also warned the public to be careful when wading in floodwaters to prevent leptospirosis. (Annabel Consuelo Petinglay/PNA)
