LAOAG CITY — The Laoag City government and some local government units in Ilocos Norte have suspended classes in the elementary and secondary levels on Wednesday afternoon.

As the southwest monsoon or “habagat” continues to bring heavy downpour here, City Mayor Chevylle Fariñas made the announcement advising parents and guardians to pick up their children in schools.

Other local government units experiencing heavy rains in their areas followed suit. College classes and work both in public and private, however, will continue as usual.

As part of the disaster preparedness, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council told local government units here to stay alert due to inclement weather.

In its 24-hour forecast, state weather bureau PAGASA said moderate to heavy rains will prevail over the regions of Ilocos and Cordillera, provinces of Batanes, Cavite, Batangas, Bataan and Zambales.

Residents in these areas are advised to take precautionary measures for possible flooding or landslides.

Since Monday, fishers were already warned not to go fishing.

The Provincial Veterinary Office has also advised farmers to secure their livestock in animal shelters and provide animal feeds.

Flights going to the Laoag International Airport were also suspended today, June 13 until tomorrow due to monsoon rains. ( Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
