Comelec braces for surge of COC filers Wednesday

MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is expecting an influx of Certificate of Candidacy (COC) filers on Wednesday for the May 14 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Elections due to the significance of the number eight in Chinese feng shui numerology.

According to Director Frances Aguindadao-Arabe of the Education and Information Department (EID), they advised election personnel to be ready in anticipation of candidates flocking the Offices of the Election Officer (OEOs) on the fifth day of the COC filing period.

“Situations like this are already anticipated by our election workers in the field. We advise everyone to properly conduct themselves in the event that circumstances become challenging,” she said in a statement.

Feng shui adherents view eight as a lucky number representing prosperity and abundance hence they are expected to flock to various OEOs nationwide at exactly 8 a.m. on April 18.

As of Monday, the poll body’s offices have received a total of 158,537 COCs nationwide.

Of the number, a total of 107,922 are male candidates while 50,615 are female aspirants.

The poll body is expecting the number to surge in a single day in light of the widely-held Chinese belief.

The filing period started on April 14 and will run until April 20. (PNA)
