MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday said it is expecting around 63 million voters for next year’s midterm elections.
“We expect that in 2019, we may have close to 63 million voters. To us, it is a good sign that the people are very much engaged and willing to participate,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said in a media forum in Manila.
The number includes an additional three million voters, aside from the 58 million voters recorded in the 2016 polls.
Also included in the figure is an estimated 1.9 million registered overseas absentee voters (OAV).
“We will also be including the 1.9 million overseas voters so we will really have a high participation in the next elections,” he added.
Jimenez said an estimated one-third of the country’s voting population are from the youth sector or those aged 18 to 35 years old.
