Comelec to hold satellite voter registration in all-girl schools

MANILA — Students from several exclusive all-girl schools need not go to the Offices of the Election Officer in areas where they reside to register as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will conduct satellite voter registration in some universities and colleges.

Commissioner Rowena Guanzon, head of the Comelec – Gender and Development (GAD), said the special registration will be held soon.

“Voter registration in colleges for girls soon. Miriam College will be first, then St. Theresa’s College, St. Scholastica’s College, and St. Paul’s College,” Guanzon said in her Twitter account, @commrguanzon, on Thursday.

She added that the registration aims to encourage more women voters to join the May 2019 midterm polls.

“Efforts to register more women voters are part of the Commission’s aim to be more inclusive, which we try to achieve by reaching out,” the poll body official said in a separate statement.

The system of continuing registration of voters began on July 2 and will run until September 29.

According to the latest data from the Comelec – Election and Barangay Affairs Department, there are already 1,260,341 female applicants since July 2.

On Thursday, the poll body held a special satellite registration for detainee voters at the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong City, the only penal institution in the country for women offenders. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
