Comelec: No delays in hearing petition for recall polls in San Juan

MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) assured the parties on the petition for recall election in the City of San Juan that there will be no undue delays on the hearing of the case.

“The Comelec assures the parties that the matter is being seriously studied and deliberated as it should be, and that there will be no unnecessary delays,” said Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez.

The poll body official issued the statement after a group of supporters of losing mayoral bet Francis Zamora, picketed in front of the Comelec office in Manila on Tuesday, asking for the immediate resolution of the case.

“The accusation that the Comelec is moving too slowly misses the point of the review process, unfortunately,” he said.

The poll body official explained that a motion for reconsideration was filed less than a month ago and they could not immediately act on it, noting that there was a process to be followed.

“A motion for reconsideration was filed last January 18, 2018. It hasn’t been a month yet, and the Comelec will not rush to a decision,” he said.

“The matter is being considered by the Comelec and a ruling will issue in due time,” Jimenez added.

Last December, the Commission en banc has ruled on the sufficiency of the recall petition against San Juan City Mayor Guia Gomez.

The recall petition was filed in May 2017 by the supporters of the former vice mayor. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
