COMELEC: annulment of 2016 presidential elections results in 3 provinces, rests on PET

Following the electoral protest of former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. against incumbent Vice President Leonor “Leni” Robredo on the poll results in Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, and Basilan for alleged cheating and violence , the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) stressed that only the presidential electoral tribunal (PET) has the authority to annul the results of the elections in those provinces.

annulment is possible in two circumstances only — if the error in counting the votes exceed half of the total number of ballots, and if its is impossible to distinguish valid ballots from not. Further, the COMELEC assures that if the PET rules to annul the results, the election body is ready to conduct special election in the three subject places.
