MANILA — Some 50 firefighters from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in the Cordillera region joined the massive cleanup drive to rehabilitate Manila Bay.

BFP chief, Director Leonard Bañago told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Thursday that personnel from the various BFP offices who are in Metro Manila for the National Fire Olympics participated in the cleanup activity.

“We are very happy and privileged to be tapped in helping clean Manila Bay and contribute in its rehabilitation,” he said.

“This is a good opportunity for our BFP personnel to show their support to the President’s [Duterte] administration,” he said.

Fire Senior Supt. Maria Sofia Mendoza, BFP Cordillera regional director, said the participation of firefighters in the cleanup drive is their way to “help save Mother Earth”.

“We are not just traditional firefighters who suppress fire, but we also care about the environment as this is for the future of our children,” she said.

In January, President Rodrigo R. Duterte ordered Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu and Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año to start cleaning up Manila Bay.
