Davao hosts 2-day National ICT Summit

DAVAO CITY – The two-day National ICT Summit will open today (Thursday) here at the SMX Convention Center with about 700 participants converging for the event aimed at showcasing various government information and communication technology (ICT) projects.

Organized by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the Chief Information Officers Forum, Inc (CIOF) and the CIOF Foundation, the ICT summit will showcase the e-Government Master Plan (eGMP), digital cities, cybersecurity, data privacy, consumer protection and digital inclusion.

Delegates will be coming from the government, ICT practitioners, academics, and the private sector.

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio will open the program.

On the second day, President Rodrigo Duterte will address the summit, which is an annual avenue for information sharing, presentation and discussion of programs, initiatives, policies, innovative paradigms and solutions, and resolution of ICT issues and concerns.

ICT is a growing industry in Davao City providing jobs, especially for fresh graduates. The city is also pushing as a BPO hub in Mindanao. As of January, there are 55 locators in Davao.

Davao City’s ICT Council president, lawyer Samuel Matunog, projected an increase in new locators and expansion of existing BPOs operating in the city.

The IT sector has continued to receive inquiries from investors, Matunog said in an earlier interview, adding that it is targeting 70,000 workers for the next 3 years. (Lilian C. Mellejor/PNA)
