Deadline for entries to Calabarzon Literacy Awards set on April 16

IMUS CITY, Cavite – The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday reminded school division superintendents in Calabarzon that entries for this year’s National Literacy Awards must be submitted to the Office of the Curriculum and Learning Management Division on or before April 16.

In a memorandum, DepEd-Calabarzon Director Diosdado M. San Antonio also encouraged all alternative implementers from the local government units (LGUs) to participate in the Literacy Awards.

San Antonio’s regional directive is pursuant to DepEd Memorandum No. 053, s. 2018, which announced the holding of the National Literacy Search this September under the auspices of DepEd’s Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC).

“The awards program aims to recognize best practices in literacy which help alleviate poverty, provide livelihood, address welfare needs, promote freedom and make education facilities accessible,” he said.

The award categories include the Outstanding Literacy Program, an award given to civil society organizations, private organizations and private educational/academic institutions that have developed and implemented literacy programs that have a positive impact on learners and communities.

Another award category is the Outstanding LGU, which has developed and implemented literacy policies, programs and projects that have an impact on the quality of life of their constituents.

The LGU category is subdivided into highly urbanized city, component independent/component city, first- to third-class municipality, and fourth- to sixth-class municipality.

Selection period will be from April 16 to May 16.

Evaluation, interview and ocular visits are slated to be conducted by the Regional Screening Committee on May 2-11 to the sites after all entries have been shortlisted.

Announcement of regional winners will be on May 18 and the list of regional winners would be submitted to the LCC Secretariat on or before May 31.
