Delta variant expected in Duterte’s Wednesday address

President Rodrigo Duterte will address the public tomorrow (July 28) and is expected to include in his talk measures against the threat posed by the COVID-19 Delta variant.

According to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, the quarantine classifications of all areas in the country will continue to be decided every 15 days.

“We need to be able to move quickly kapag talagang sumipa po ang kaso ng Delta variant, kasi ganyan po ‘yung anyo ng Delta, biglang na lang sumisipa,” Roque said in his briefing today (July 27).

The Metro Manila Council (MMC) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will meet on July 28 to discuss Delta variant measures in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The implementation of granular lockdowns and the limiting of movements of senior citizens and unvaccinated individuals are being evaluated by the council.

“We will not sacrifice the whole city. Kasi mayroon naman tayong mga CESU [city epidemiology and surveillance] … Alam natin kung saan ang clustering,” Parañaque Mayor Edwin Olivarez said.

The official said restrictions for unvaccinated individuals will still be based on data and experts’ recommendations.

The San Juan City government confirmed on July 27 the detection of two Delta cases in the city involving a 9-year-old and a 25-year-old who were tagged as recovered on July 15.

The 9-year-old patient’s parents were positive for COVID-19, and his father is an officemate and close contact of the 25-year old patient.

“All health and safety protocols are being strictly implemented while stringent contact tracing is being conducted to make sure we arrest the spread of the virus,” the local government stated.

Meanwhile, Laguna Gov. Ramil Hernandez confirmed in a Facebook post the detection of 18 Delta variant cases in Laguna.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairperson Benhur Abalos said they will discuss the borders of the NCR Plus Area that comprises Metro Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Laguna, and Rizal due to the Delta variant, possibly for future action. – Report from Karen Villanda/AG – jlo
