Government dismantles unauthorized structures at the NBP

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), and other government agencies have commenced today, 09 October 2019, the demolition of illegal structures erected at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP).

These were built as privileges conferred to inmates but beyond the wardens’ sight which gave possible leeway for the conduct of illegal activities inside. The initial operation resulted to the confiscation of contrabands like illegal drugs, knives, prohibited appliances, sex toys and more.

NCRPO Director Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar lauded the move, it being aligned with the state’s eradication of illegal drugs. “Hindi maubos-ubos ang problema sa iligal na droga dahil dito ang sentro, dito nagpapatakbo, dito nagbibigay ng direksyon, dito nagkokontrol, so might as well tumulong tayo sa pinaka source para maresolba natin ang problemang ito” (The problem on illicit drugs cannot be obliterated because this is the center where everything is being run, the command center, the control situs. So we might as well help to get down to the very source and resolve this problem).

12 units of heavy equipment belonging to the Department of Public Works and Highways have been deployed for the demolition job. It would take 3 days to clear each of the four quadrants of the maximum detention .

BuCor chief Gerald Bantag earlier had admitted that bribery by inmates exists but no one has come to him so far. He urged the new wardens from the Special Action Force to stand firm against corruption.
