CALAMBA CITY, Laguna – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) here on Tuesday encouraged the public to report environment-related cases through the social media for an expeditious and appropriate response.
Dr. Sofio B. Quintana, DENR-Calabarzon regional director, made the appeal as the regional agency recognized the vital role of social media in bringing up concerns and eliciting prompt response.
Quintana said the expeditious and effective response was proven when two grass owls were rescued from a grassfire incident at Barangay Canlalay, Biñan City on Feb. 12 by officers and personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) who at the time were putting out the blaze.
The DENR regional official said the information on the grassfire incident was first circulated on social media and was forwarded to the DENR Calabarzon office which covered Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon provinces, in the evening of the rescue operation pertaining to the affected fauna.
The public may reach the DENR Calabarzon to report environment and natural resources-related incidents through their social media accounts @denr4aofficial for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for immediate response.
According to Melinda Gapas-Gordo, officer-in-charge of the DENR Calabarzon Regional Strategic Communication and Initiatives Section (RSCIS), the two grass owls were turned over to the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO)-Laguna the next day.
The two grass owls were subsequently turned over to the Laguna Wildlife Park and Rescue Center owned by Dr. Nielsen Donato for intensive care, said Kizza S. Candulisas, PENRO Laguna information vice chairperson for education and communication team. (Saul Pa-a/PNA)
