LAOAG CITY — The Schools Division of Ilocos Norte (SDOIN) is set to erect its own Internet tower this month to provide a better quality of service to contemporary learners.

With an initial funding of more than PHP600,000 raised through the “Christmas Tree Para sa ICT” advocacy program of the Department of Education (DepEd) – Ilocos Norte, Schools Division Superintendent Vilma Eda on Friday expressed her gratitude to all public and private stakeholders, including some people abroad who contributed to making this dream happen.

“Anytime from now, we will do the groundbreaking of the first tower. This will be a great help for us resulting in easy access of information and learning materials,” Eda said in an interview, adding that they are in close coordination with electrical communication engineers for the establishment of the first tower at the SDOIN compound.

She added that other local government units and schools in the province have also manifested interests to have their own Internet towers.

For one, the local government unit of Burgos has committed to install the second tower at the Paayas Elementary School and the third tower at the Burgos Agro-Industrial School.

The Internet tower, according to Kenneth Tabios, information and communications technology coordinator of DepEd-Ilocos Norte, will connect the division to the different schools of the province even when the telecommunication systems are down.

Launched on November 19 last year, the fundraising drive kicked off at the division office where employees and visitors purchased Christmas accessories from the division’s cash unit as donation for the project.

Each of the Christmas décors — stars, angels, colorful balls, flowers, leaves, and bells – has a corresponding amount ranging from PHP200 to PHP50,000.

The Christmas tree fundraising drive will run until January 14.
