DepEd pushes ‘PasKomunidad’ for holiday season

COTABATO CITY — School heads and public-school teachers in Region 12 (Soccsksargen) have been urged to make Christmas meaningful by holding the “PasKomunidad” as an alternative to Christmas parties in schools.

Antonio Maganto, Information Officer of the Department of Education (DepEd) 12, said Monday all teachers in the provinces of North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani have been reminded of the DepEd directive to avoid expensive and lucrative children’s Christmas parties even if the parents approve of them.

“They can make it more meaningful by donating whatever they have to the needy,” Maganto said, adding that some pupils in previous years donated gifts to poor and indigent students near their school.

He said Dr. Allan Farnazo, DepEd-12 director, has been pushing for the “PasKomunidad” project where teachers and pupils are encouraged to conduct feeding programs instead of lavish Christmas parties.

“A tree planting activity within the school campus could also be an alternative to an expensive Christmas party,” he said.

Maganto also dissuaded teachers to have their pupils’ Christmas party held outside the school.

Soccsksargen consists of South Cotabato, Cotabato City, Cotabato province, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City.
