DepEd records 23.6 enrollees amid COVID-19 pandemic

The Department of Education (DepEd) has reported 23.6 million learners have enrolled for the school year 2020 to 2021 nationwide including 21.8 million students for public schools and 1.7 million students for private schools.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones has stated that the increased number of enrollees is a good sign because it means that plenty of parents and students are still interested to continue learning.

“That’s already 85% of last year’s enrollment, in spite of COVID, in spite of the downturn of the economy. In spite of the challenges we are facing now, na-achieve na natin yung 96% ng ating dating enrollment sa public sector (we have achieved 96% of our former enrollment [rate] in the public sector).”

The Education department has distributed 1,042,575 gadgets to 43,948 schools in the country while 211,344 are yet to be distributed this December. It is also coordinating with the telecommunication companies regarding the payment of internet.
