DepEd reports increasing ALS enrollees

MANILA — The Department of Education (DepEd) has so far recorded about 89,000 enrollees in its Alternative Learning System (ALS), dubbed as a second-chance education for adults and young dropouts.

“I’m very happy that we have an additional activity, which is the acceptance of enrollees in our Alternative Learning System. As of today, we have already around 89,000 enrollees all over the country in ALS,” Briones said in a statement on Thursday, noting that enrollment in the system had been increasing.

Briones explained that the increase could be attributed to the integration of ALS special registration booths for volunteers in this year’s Brigada Eskwela.

“We thank everyone for campaigning for this very special program, which is also close to the heart of our President,” she said.

In an earlier interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA), DepEd Assistant Secretary GH Ambat said there are 300,000 learners already enrolled to the program nationwide, and the bulk of these learners come from the regions of Bicol, Davao, Cagayan Valley, and Soccsksargen.

Ambat said ALS is a “second chance education” for adults and young people who dropped out of school due to sickness, family problems, early pregnancy, or urgent need to work. (PNA)
