The Philippine government will call for a stronger United Nations (UN) in its attendance to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level Week in New York from Sept. 21 to 27, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Tuesday.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, who will lead the Philippine delegation, will also reaffirm Manila’s “strong commitment to multilateralism and a rules-based order” before the international body.

The DFA said in a statement, “She will highlight the Philippines’ role in addressing complex challenges as well as the country’s call for a stronger UN—one that promotes peace, security, climate action, migrant protection, and sustainable development.”

Lazaro will lead efforts to campaign for the Philippines’ bid for a non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council for the term 2027-2028.

Other government officials will join the DFA chief in high-level discussions on critical issues, including on artificial intelligence, climate financing, migration, biodiversity, and maritime security.

In addition, she will hold meetings with her counterparts to discuss the country’s bilateral and multilateral ties.

Lazaro is representing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. after the Chief Executive decided to skip the high-level gathering to focus on domestic issues.

Marcos announced recently the complete composition of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) to look into irregularities in flood control and other infrastructure projects. (PNA)
