DFA urges thorough probe into OFW hit-and-run case in Saudi

MANILA — An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) succumbed to injuries from a hit-and-run incident in Saudi Arabia, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Tuesday said.

Consul General Edgar Badajos said the victim, a 51-year-old construction worker from Butuan City whose name was not disclosed, was struck by a vehicle in Jeddah on June 12 and was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries four days later.

The Philippine Consulate has requested Saudi authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into his death following allegations of negligence on the part of his employer.

Badajos said the Consulate will also make inquiries with the hospital where the victim was taken to determine if the employer extended all the possible assistance to keep him alive.

DFA Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano assured assistance in the repatriation of the victim’s remains, as he sent condolences to the family of the OFW.

“We extend our deepest sympathy with the family of our kababayan who died a few days ago from injuries he sustained in a hit-and-run accident in Jeddah,” he said. (Joyce Ann L. Rocamora/PNA)
