DFA warns Filipinos as Typhoon Jebi hits Japan

MANILA— The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) issued on Tuesday an advisory to the Filipino community in Japan as Typhoon Jebi made landfall in the western part of the country.

In a statement sent to the media, DFA Assistant Secretary Elmer Cato said the agency is monitoring the typhoon and is in close coordination with the Philippine embassy in Tokyo and the Philippine Consulate General in Osaka.

Around 280,000 Filipinos in Japan have been already advised to restrict their movement and monitor updates from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The agency also called on the Filipinos to monitor the announcements from their respective local authorities, including possible evacuations and disruption of mass transport services.

Ambassador to Japan Jose Laurel said the typhoon is expected to affect the Shikoku, Kinki, Tohoku, Tokai and Hokuriku regions, adding that both the embassy and the consulate are ready to provide assistance to Filipinos if needed.

Tropical Cyclone 1821 or Typhoon Jebi is said to be the strongest to hit Japan in 25 years.

Following the heavy rains and strong winds it brought, a ship was earlier sent crashing into a bridge linking Osaka’s Kansai International Airport to the mainland. (Joyce Ann L. Rocamora/PNA)
