The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said its steps towards a better internet service quality has borne a fruitful result.

In today’s (Aug. 2) Laging Handa public briefing, DICT Sec. Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan II reported that based on the Ookla Speedtest in July, they have recorded a 741.34% increase in the average speed of the  fixed broadband internet and 341.40% increase in the mobile internet speed since July 2016.

The DICT chief compared the current speed to the July 2016 internet speed where the average speed for the fixed broadband internet was around 7.91 Megabits per second (Mbps) and 7.44 Mbps for the mobile internet speed. In July 2021, the average download speed of the fixed broadband internet is 66.55 Mbps while the mobile internet speed is 32.84 Mbps.

“Ngayong July 2021, ang average download speed ng fixed broadband internet ay nasa 66.55 Mbps at ang mobile internet speed naman ay nasa 32.84 Mbps,” he said.

Sec. Honasan also shared that their “marching order” from President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is to “connect” the government to other governments, the public, and to “connect everybody to each other” through information and communications technology.

“Ang mission niyo ay connectivity. Connect government to other governments–domestic and global, connect government to business para tuloy ang kalakalan. Connect the government to the citizens, and connect everybody to each other sa pamamagitan ng information and communications technology, at gawin ninyo ito sa mas mabilis na pamamaraan, mura kung hindi libre, and do this in a more secure manner,” he said quoting the President.

Honasan assured that the department is doing its best to “connect the farthest, the poorest, and the smallest” because they believe that it is the “the way to unite a nation.” – rir
