TACLOBAN CITY — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has reiterated its call to local government units (LGUs) to lead the cleanup drive to remove all campaign materials in their respective areas.

DILG 8 (Eastern Visayas) Director Artemio Caneja issued the reminder after noting that campaign materials in many areas of the region have not been taken down more than a week after the elections.

Caneja cited Interior Secretary Eduardo Año’s directive for local governments to remove posters, sample ballots, flyers, leaflets, and tarpaulins, urging the candidates to take responsibility for the cleanup.

He said there is a standing instruction from the DILG chief to immediately tidy up the public schools that served as polling precincts to prepare for the opening of classes next month.

“Cleaning up the poll trash will not only make the surroundings clean but will also be an opportunity for the people to gather and work together for the improvement of their communities and the nation,” Caneja said in an interview Wednesday.

The DILG said everyone should work together and act fast in cleaning up election trash because these might clog canals and waterways and later cause flooding.

The DILG regional chief also congratulated the Philippine National Police, Commission on Elections, teachers, DILG officers, and other volunteers for ensuring safe and credible elections last May 13.
