LAOAG CITY — Forty Senior High School (SHS) teachers from Ilocos Norte are set to graduate at the De La Salle University in Manila this week from a short-term training course on basic probability and statistics.
The training is in support of the continuing professional development of Department of Education-Ilocos Norte SHS mentors.
Raymond Santos, Senior Education Program Specialist of the Schools Division of Ilocos Norte, on Tuesday said the month-long lecture series will enable participants to deepen their knowledge and understanding on probability counting techniques and random variables and exposed them to the different learning strategies.
They were provided with learning materials such as lecture and exercise solutions for the benefit of their students.
Some of the topics included counting techniques, random variable, discrete distribution functions and continuous distribution functions.
“The activity was offered first to Bacoor and then the Division of Ilocos Norte took it with the approval of Schools Division Superintendent Vilma Eda,” Santos said.
He noted that the program was in partnership with the Industrial Engineering Gokongwei College of Engineering of De la Salle and the National Educators Academy of the Philippines.
Santos said Ilocos Norte teachers are fortunate to have been chosen as recipients of the free sessions with breakfast and snacks, courtesy of professors from the De La Salle University led by Assistant Professor Ronaldo Polancos.
Study shows that in primary and secondary school levels where probability and statistics are part of the mathematics curriculum, many teachers lack specific preparation and education. Textbooks and curriculum documents prepared for mentors do not offer enough support for this, it was learned.
To level up their competency levels, Eda is encouraging teachers to attend trainings in statistics education. (Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
