DND orders probe into alleged Chinese harassment of news crew in WPS

The Department of National Defense (DND) has ordered the investigation of the alleged harassment of a news team by several Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea.

DND Spokesperson Dir. Arsenio Andolong said the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) was directed to conduct the probe regarding the incident.

“The outcome of which will be used to coordinate any appropriate action through the National Task Force for West Philippine Sea and engagement among the Department of Foreign Affairs, DND, Department of Transportation and other concerned agencies,” Dir. Andolong elucidated.

On Thursday, a news team reportedly headed to Ayungin Shoal was allegedly blocked by a Chinese vessel. Ayungin Shoal is within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines.

The AFP is now coordinating with the reporter involved and assured commitment to its duty in protecting the country’s sovereignty.

“Amidst the situation, the AFP reiterates its commitment to follow the dictates of the Constitution to protect the people and secure our sovereignty and sovereign rights,” AFP Spokesperson MGen, Edgard Arevalo said. – Report from Bea Bernardo/AG-jbb
