DOE eyes use of EVs as backup power source amid Mayon unrest

The Department of Energy (DOE) will be lending out an electric vehicle and energy converter to Albay as part of its disaster relief efforts amid the high level of unrest of Mayon Volcano.

The DOE said the use of electric vehicles as backup energy sources during emergencies will make disaster response “easier to mobilize in providing power during calamities.”

“This innovative use of a mobile power source is sought to aid in the disaster relief efforts in Albay to provide emergency power to evacuation centers in the event of a power outage,” it said in a release.

“The DOE would like to ensure uninterrupted power for the operation of essential services during the ongoing unrest at Mayon Volcano,” it added.

The DOE-Task Force on Energy Resiliency (TFER) is continuously monitoring Mayon Volcano for any anticipated power interruptions in Albay. -ag
