DOE pushes power efficiency, notes 34% PH consumption rise

BAGUIO CITY — The Department of Energy (DOE) is pushing for the efficient use of energy by all sectors nationwide to sustain the country’s power needs.

In the closing of the two-day “E-Power Mo” campaign in Baguio City on Wednesday, the DOE said the country’s electricity consumption increased by 34 percent from 2010 to 2016.

“For a period of six years from 2010 to 2016, the country had recorded a 34-percent increase in the demand for electricity,” said DOE’s Energy Utilization Management Bureau Director Jesus Tamang.

The DOE, in partnership with the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) and the Philippine Information Agency, conducted the two-day E-Power Mo forum and seminar on energy efficiency on April 24-25 here in Baguio.

Tamang said the country is expected to even use more energy in the future, with its projected economic growth of 3.5 percent yearly.

As such, he said, the DOE is not only counting on enjoining investors to go into energy production and development of indigenous energy sources for a steady and adequate supply of electricity.

The department, he said, also urges the consumers and all industry stakeholders to learn how to use energy efficiently by, say, using energy-saving technology and renewable sources of energy.

Judicious energy conservation, renewable power sources, and efficient use of energy are the basic goals of the country’s energy plan directions from 2017 to 2040, Tamang said.

He said the government aims until 2040 for energy security, expanding energy access, and promotion of low-carbon footprint.

The over-all objective by 2040 is to support the country’s economic development through efficiency gains and energy security, he said.

Tamang added the economy’s various sectors–infrastructure, residential, transportation, industry, and public utilities–must be able to come up with measures on how to conserve energy and use power efficiently. (Pamela Mariz Geminiano/PNA)
