DOH reminds LGUs to implement stricter measures on mass gatherings

The Department of Health (DOH) reminded the local government units (LGUs) to implement stricter measures on mass gatherings.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire on Monday (June 7) appealed to the LGUs and the public to avoid mass gatherings such as parties because it can be a source of super spreader events.

“Tayo ay nakikiusap sa ating local government units at sa ating publiko na ipinagbabawal na rin po ang pagtitipon gaya ng mga parties na maaaring maging source ng superspreader events.”

In relation to this, the OCTA Research said that, despite Quezon City leading in the number of new COVID-19 cases from May 31 to June 6, Davao City might take its place next week. Based on its data, QC has a -22& growth rate while Davao City has a 54% growth rate.

Moreover, the group identified Davao,  Cagayan de Oro, General Santos,  Koronadal, Cotabato City, Bacolod, Iloilo City, Dumaguete, and Tuguegarao as areas of concern.

The DOH ensured that assistance will be given to the areas outside of NCR Plus with a high number of COVID-19 cases.

“Titingnan kung ano yung mga kakulangan nila. Actually, nakapagpadala na po tayo ng mga kagamitan, ng mga PPEs, ng mga gamot. At saka yung mga pondo po hinahanda na rin para maibigay sa ating mga ospital na nangangailangan sa ngayon,” Vergeire said.

Meanwhile, World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative to the Philippines Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe said that the spread of variants of concern might have contributed to the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in various areas nationwide.

“Increased proportions of this alpha and beta variant are…like in many countries, these variants are…and becoming the predominant type. And this could also explain why we are seeing continuous increase in cases in many places.”

Abeyasinghe reiterated the directive to comply with the minimum health standards at all times.
