With the recent Taal volcano eruption resulting in airborne volcanic ashfall, the Department of Health (DOH) advises the public, especially Taal-affected residents, to follow emergency safety tips to help prevent health complications that may be caused by the ashfall.
Eye Care
Volcanic ash contains uneven edges which makes it an irritant to the eyes. The public, especially Taal-affected residents, should wear safety goggles and use eyeglasses temporarily instead of contact lenses. If irritation occurs, rinse eyes with lukewarm running water and immediately consult a doctor if the irritation does not stop.
Ensuring food safety
Due to its “tiny size and low density,” volcanic ashes can be carried out miles away from the crater. Therefore, residents should wash their hands following the DOH guidelines of proper handwashing before cooking and eating, clean fruits and vegetables with running water, regularly check the expiration dates of stored foods, and properly cover water containers.
Respiratory care
To avoid breathing difficulty and other respiratory problems, always keep the doors and windows closed or try to hang wet curtains as covers while protecting the nose from inhaling particulates by wearing medical or surgical masks, dust masks, or a wet handkerchief. Moreover, always make sure to secure supplies of asthma and allergy medicines according to the doctor’s prescription. If respiratory problems occur, immediately consult a doctor.
DOH also strongly asks affected residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and strictly stay within the protection of their home or evacuation area with awareness of road conditions and attentiveness to local authorities’ advice.
The department also urges the public to prepare emergency bags (Go Bag) stuffed with supplies of food, water, clothing, first aid, and medicine as part of safety measures. – bny
