ILOILO CITY — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will continue with its routine inspection of establishments here with violators of occupational safety to be meted with fines.
DOLE Western Visayas Regional Director Cyril Ticao made the call following an incident wherein a worker of the Akhiras Manokan and Frozen Good in Barangay Mansaya in Lapuz district was found dead after his hand got caught and body eventually sucked in a meat grinder machine on June 22.
“We impose fines on establishments that violate occupational safety,” he said.
He admitted, though, that they have not yet inspected the meat factory.
He emphasized that all establishments are supposed to have a safety officer and workers should wear personal protective equipment (PPE). “Always think of their safety,” he said.
Meantime, he said that they are done with their investigation about the incident. On Tuesday afternoon, they met with the owner Joselor Jaleco, where the latter signified their plan to shut down operations.
However, on Monday, DOLE already issued a work stoppage order and ordered the establishment to pay the fine of PHP100,000.
“They will temporarily stop operation until such time that the imminent danger is addressed,” added Ticao.
He said that he advised the owner to submit in writing about their plan to shut down operations.
