DOLE in Western Visayas ready to assist displaced workers in Boracay

ILOILO CITY — The Department of Labor and Employment 6 (Western Visayas) is ready to assist workers who will be displaced in case the closure of Boracay businesses pushes through.

In a media interview Tuesday, DOLE-6 information officer Amy Judicpa said their livelihood assistance is already in place to help affected workers.

She said their assistance depend on the interests of workers.

“We are planning to conduct profiling if the closure will start so that we will know the interests of the affected workers,” she said.

Aside from livelihood assistance, Judicpa said that they are also planning to partner with the Department of Tourism 6 (DOT) to facilitate a job fair for the workers.

“We will invite various employers on the job fair to help the affected workers in case Boracay businesses will really close,” she said.

Aside from this, Judicpa said that they could also link them to the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) so they could acquire skills especially those in demand in the job industry.

She also assured to help them after their training by linking them to companies that are in need of skilled workers.

Recently, labor groups in Western Visayas have expressed apprehension that almost 19,000 formal and informal workers could lose their jobs with the proposed business closure.

But Judicpa said that they are still coordinating with the local government unit of Malay, Aklan to get the actual number of workers who will be affected by the closure. (PNA)
