Don’t let students in during class hours, Internet shops warned

MANILA — The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) warned Internet shops and other leisure centers not to allow students to enter their premises during school hours.

NCRPO chief Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar made the warning after he caught 12 high school students inside the computer shops and Internet cafe in West Rembo, Makati City during a surprise inspection on Thursday.

This violates Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 86 issued in 2010 prohibiting students in public and private elementary and secondary schools from going to computer shops, malls, theaters, and the likes during their class hours.

“We have given this directive to all police community precinct and station commanders to inspect the vicinity of schools, especially billiard halls and computer shops to ensure that DO 86 series of 2010 is being complied with,” the Metro Manila top cop said.

Eleazar warned owners of establishments to comply with the order or face automatic cancellation or revocation of business permits or licenses.

“What is important here is that schools and owners of this kind of business should know that there is this kind of regulation,” he stressed.

He said they will work on this together with school officials as well as local government units.

Also, Eleazar said the NCRPO will check local ordinances for other details, such as how far the recreation centers should be from school zones.

The Metro Manila top cop also said the NCRPO will continue to fight street crimes through mobile and foot patrols as well as police visibility in school areas.

He also said they will be on the lookout for criminals and criminal gangs preying on students.
