The Department of Transportation (DOTr) recognized on Monday, March 6, the role of cyclists and pedestrians, saying that they should be highly prioritized in the push for safer and more sustainable road transportation.

DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista made this remark during the launch of the Share the Road Video Campaign and the signing of the Pledge of Commitment between the department and SM Supermalls.

“It is important to note, and we cannot emphasize enough that the President, through the PDP 2023-2028’s adoption, recognizes that pedestrians and cyclists should be accorded the highest priority among all road users,” he said.

The DOTr said the pledge of commitment is anchored on the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 for the empowerment of active transport users through improved information education campaigns.

Bautista said it is also “a testament to the public of the commitment of the Department of Transportation and SM to disseminate information materials.”

The video for the campaign will be shown in SM Cinemas, led screens, condominiums, and other areas with high traffic.

Covered by the video are policies, infrastructure, and protocols on the active transport program implementation.

DOTr Undersecretary Mark Steven Pastor said 564 kilometers of protected bike lanes have been established in the last three years. Another 470 kilometers will be added this year.  – gb
