DPWH chief opens P165-M QC flood control project

MANILA, Aug. 7 — Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar led the opening of the two additional vehicular lanes on top of a completed flood control structure worth PHP165 million in Quezon City on Monday.

He said that movement of vehicles along Quezon Avenue eastbound will significantly improve as the 820.62 lineal meters additional service road over the newly constructed reinforced concrete box culvert from Timog Avenue to Scout Albano was opened to motorists.

“The flood control project, which costs PHP165 million, involves the construction of reinforced concrete box culvert that increased the capacity of Anaran Creek for effective mitigation of perennial flooding at South Triangle area particularly at Mother Ignacia Avenue and Panay Avenue,” he said in a statement.

According to the DPWH chief, the project has been completed after they implemented the 24/7 construction scheme in line with the efforts to fast-track infrastructure development.

“The old open channel of 2.40 meters width by 4.30 meters deep from Timog Avenue to Scout Borromeo Street was replaced by a reinforced concrete box culvert 5.30 meters width by 4.35 meters deep,” Villar added.

He noted that the six meters width top slab of the box culvert was converted into an additional two lanes service road.

“With the completion of Timog Avenue to Scout Albano Street segment, the project, which spans 1.1 km in total, will increase the capacity of Anaran Creek by 123.4% and decongest traffic in Quezon Avenue. It is also an alternative route to EDSA and Timog Avenue,” he explained.

On the other hand, Villar formally inaugurated the rehabilitation of the 1.2 kilometer Sergeant Esguerra Road located in Barangay South Triangle.

“We’ve expanded the existing asphalt pavement of 9.8 meters and replaced it with a concrete pavement of 14 meters. With the opening of additional two lanes, we expect traffic to ease along EDSA, Quezon Avenue and Timog Avenue,” he added. (Ferdinand G. Patinio/PNA)
