DPWH Completes Strengthening Works at Magallanes Interchange

Works to restore the structural integrity of the 41-year old Magallanes Interchange in Makati City has been completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

DPWH-National Capital Region Director Melvin B. Navarro said series of repair works were done in five (5) stages at the 1,809.50-lineal meter flyover to be able to strengthen the structure that has served as a junction between the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) since 1975.

“We are happy to announce that we were able to do all the much needed strengthening works at Magallanes Interchange, one of the busiest elevated intersections of Metro Manila,” said Director Navarro.

DPWH implemented repair and reconstruction on expansion joints and approach, strengthening and retrofitting of deck slab, and asphalt overlays on the flyover in 5 stages which involves Manila to Alabang on Phase 1, Ayala to Roxas Boulevard on Phase 2, Alabang to Ayala on Phase 3, Ayala to Manila/Alabang on Phase 4, and Roxas Boulevard to Ayala on Phase 5.

Magallanes Interchange, which Director Navarro said was last repaired in the 1980s had prior damages on carriageway particularly cracks and disintegration of concrete, guard rails, and steel expansion joints, making it one of the most priority structures in Metro Manila that need retrofitting.

With the completion of the project, Director Navarro said Magallanes Interchange will be able to cope with extreme events such as earthquakes.

Strengthening works at Ayala and Quezon Bridges in Manila were earlier completed by the DPWH for greater structural stability and safety of the motoring public. | DPWH
