DPWH opens P273.5-M Ilocos Sur bridge in time for Lent

MANILA — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said it has completed 665-lineal meter bridge worth PHP273 million in the southern part of Ilocos Sur, which is set to support livelihood and tourism in the province.

According to DPWH Region 1 Director Ronnel M. Tan, Sugpon Bridge along Alilem-Sugpon-Sudipen Road in the municipality of Sugpon was opened to the motoring public in time for the Lenten season.

“The newly-built Sugpon Bridge which is designed as an all-weather bridge now allows safer and faster link between the town of Sugpon, Ilocos Sur to the outer towns of La Union, crossing Amburayan River,” he said in a statement Wednesday.

The project involves the construction of a pre-stressed concrete girder deck slab bridge with 19 spans, and 4.5 lineal meters of carriageway.

It also has flood control component, slope protection, and embankment protection.

With the completion of the bridge, Tan added that residents and tourists no longer need small boats or rafts just to cross the river during rainy season.

“Prior to the construction of the bridge, Amburayan River is only passable during dry season and jeepneys are required to have dual operated system to be able to overcome the loose portions of the riverbed,” the DPWH official explained. (PNA)
