DPWH reopens lane of collapsed Adriatico Bridge to light vehicles

MANILA, Sept. 12 — The damaged bridge (reinforced box culvert) along Adriatico Street between Quirino Avenue and Pablo Ocampo Street (old Vito Cruz) in Malate, Manila was reopened to light vehicles on Monday, 11 September 2017.

This was announced by DPWH National Capital Region Director Melvin B. Navarro, who cited that one (1) out of the four (4) lanes of the box culvert which collapsed on Friday, 08 September 2017 due to a parked overloaded garbage truck, is now safe for light vehicle use.

“Based on the findings, the deck of the structure collapsed since the parked garbage truck weighs 25 tons, 10 tons more than the maximum allowable gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the bridge which is 15 tons. It incurred a 4-meter wide damage, prompting us to close the bridge for repair,” said Director Navarro.

Upon learning the incident, DPWH Undersecretary for Regional Operations in Luzon Dimas S. Soguilon personally supervised on Saturday, 09 September 2017 the immediate restoration works and directed the installation of barricades and detour and road closure signage to warn and guide the public.

“We will immediately prepare the program of works and reconstruction plans for the bridge so that we will be able to undertake emergency replacement. An estimated P45.1 million is needed to reconstruct the damaged bridge,” added Navarro.

Built in 1985, Adriatico Bridge which spans 10 meters and has a width of 28 meters is a 32-year old box culvert spanning Estero de San Antonio Abad. (DPWH/PIA)
