Drug-related deaths a fraction of 6,129 ‘solved’ cases: PNP

MANILA — Out of the 6,129 resolved homicide cases, only 389 or 6.49 percent are drug-related, the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced Wednesday.

These figures are from July 1, 2016 to Sept. 15, 2017 according to the latest data on homicide cases nationwide from the Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM).

Senior Supt. Adelio Benjamin Castillo,DIDM case monitoring head, said that 5,731 out of the 6,129 recorded cases are found to be non-drug related, which is equivalent to 93.51 percent.

The PNP earlier filed 3,475 separate criminal charges against arrested suspects involved in solved slay cases under investigation by police units.

In addition, around 2,654 criminal charges were filed against identified suspects in slay cases who remain at-large and are now the subject of manhunt operations.

The PNP considers a case as “solved” when at least one suspect is arrested and charged in court, while cases are considered as cleared when a suspect or suspects are identified and cases had been filed while follow-up operations for their arrest are underway.

Records from the DIDM indicate a total of 6,129 resolved cases out of the 15,911 homicide cases investigated by the PNP.

Citing data generated from the DIDM’s Crime Incident Reporting and Analysis System (CIRAS), Castillo explained the 5,731 non-drug-related homicides stemmed from various motives and circumstances such as arguments and misunderstanding, personal grudge, land dispute, love triangle, family dispute or “rido”, atrocities by threat groups, business rivalry, road rage, unpaid debt, indiscriminate firing, and revenge.
