DSWD food distribution kicks off

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has begun the distribution of food packages to people highly affected by the enhanced community quarantine due to COVID-19 outbreak.

Three tricks of food items have been delivered in Quezon City, one each for Malabon and Valenzuela.

DSWD Regional Director Vicente Gregorio Tomas said the beneficiaries will continue to receive supplies as the agency will keep on preparing food packs daily to help all LGUs in Mega Manila.

The food packs include rice, canned food, coffee, and other essential items. Each pack can last up to three days for a family with three to five members.

Tomas said they will continue to monitor local government units (LGUs) to determine the needed additional relief goods. Food pack distribution to a community could be repeated every two to three days, depending on the urgency of needs or as determined by the LGU.

The agency has assured that social distancing will be implemented and long queues will be avoided during the distribution process.

There will be relief centers will deliver the food packs.

The DSWD and LGUs have agreed to implement a house-to-house distribution, and have also been preparing to help other regions in Luzon with the assistance of the AFP and PNP.

The department shared they will continue to give guarantee letters to people seeking medical assistance. Aside from medical and burial assistance, the DSWD has agreed to offer transportation aid based on case studies and recommendations of social workers. – Report from Sandra Samala
