DSWD releases P10-M for Sarangani school projects

GENERAL SANTOS CITY–The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has released some Php10 million for the construction of classroom buildings and daycare centers in Malungon town in Sarangani Province.

Malungon Mayor Maria Theresa Constantino said Tuesday the preparatory works are underway for the implementation of the project, which is funded under the Bottom-Up Budgeting (BUB) program.

The development of the school projects is supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), according to Constantino.

Constantino said the municipal government allocated a counterpart funding of P1.45 million for the construction of the four classrooms and four daycare centers.

These comprise one unit of three-classroom building for the Malungon National High School, one classroom building for Lamlangil Elementary School and one unit of daycare center building each for the municipal government, Sitio Nanima in Poblacion, Barangay Malungon Gamay and Barangay Malandag.

“This is a convergence initiative aimed to enhance our ongoing education programs,” Constantino said.

She cited the municipal government’s flagship Innovation and Collaboration in Attaining No limitation in Education or I-CAN program.

Implemented in partnership with the Department of Education, the program aims to ensure that all young learners in the area will have access to quality education.

The municipal government had adopted a reading and mentoring program for public schools to help improve the performance of learners, especially those in remote areas.

The program was launched 10 years ago in response to its own assessment that areas with high poverty incidence in the municipality are also those with low education performance among learners.

Malungon also has ongoing projects facilitated by the DSWD through the conditional transfer or the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and the World Bank-assisted Kapitbisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (Kalahi-CIDSS). (PNA)
