The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Tuesday, July 4, assured it is ready to cooperate with local government units (LGUs) to provide help for those affected by the possible impacts of El Niño.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian said in an interview that additional assistance, such as food and non-food items, as well as cash aid, will be distributed to affected sectors.

“Kami, we already stock piled nationwide. Mga food packs and non food items. We are also ready to come in with cash assistance. Pero the important fact there is, bagama’t handa kami, kailangang mag-coordinate pa rin kami sa LGUs,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) declared the beginning of the El Niño phenomenon, which could bring about dry spells, drought, and torrential rains.

Gatchalian guaranteed that they will continue to work with LGUs in case of any weather disturbances amid the phenomenon. –ag
