Dumpsite in Gen. Trias turned urban garden wins award

GENERAL TRIAS CITY, Cavite — Barangay Manggahan’s Tinungan Day Care Center has proven a point when it successfully transformed what used to be a garbage dump into an urban vegetable garden, which was adjudged “Best Vegetable Garden in Child Development Center.”

The Manggahan Day Care Center bested 65 other day care centers during the awarding ceremonies Monday (Oct. 8) after earning the nod of the panel of judges, which chose its garden from among the contenders in the pre-school nutrition program competition held last month.

“We encouraged each Day Care Center to plant vegetables on open spaces of our centers, para makatulong po tayo sa pagmumulat sa mga kabataan ang pagtatanim at pagkain ng gulay sa mag-aaral ng ating mga centers (so we could help raise awareness among our school children to plant and eat vegetables grown right at our day care centers),” Rebecca Generoso, GenTri Social Welfare and Development head said.

The competition for the “Best Vegetable Garden in Child Development Center” was launched during the “Nutrition Month” observance in July this year.

Vice Mayor Maurito “Morit” Sison led the simple awarding ceremony at the city esplanade with Cavite Councilors League (CCL) Federation President Kerby Salazar, City Councilors Jowie Carampot, Gary Grepo, Pafoo Lozares and Nanding Granados.

The Tinungan Day Care Center in Barangay Manggahan as grand prize winner won PHP 15,000 and certificate with its theme “Tambakan ng Basura noon, Luntiang Gulayan na Ngayon” (a garbage dumpsite then, a green vegetable garden now).”

Sitio Elang Day Care Center clinched the second prize with PHP 10,000 and Barangay Tapia Day Care Center settled for third place with PHP 7,000 cash prize.

Fourth to seventh place winners were Pasong Camachile II Child Development Center, Javalera Phase 1 Day Care Center, Sunny Brook II-B Day Care Center and KPNP Day Care Center, respectively, each receiving PHP 1,500 in consolation prize and certificate. (PNA)
