Duterte orders closure of e-sabong ops

By Katrina Gracia Consebido

President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday, May 2, ordered the closure of e-sabong (online cockfighting) operations.

Duterte’s order came upon the recommendation of Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año.

“The recommendation of Sec. Año is to do away with e-sabong, I agreed with it and it’s good. So e-sabong will end by tonight,” Duterte said in his pre-taped speech aired on Tuesday.

During his Talk to the People, Duterte said he initially allowed e-sabong because of the revenue it generates for the government, but eventually decided against it because “it was working against our values.”

He said that the official order will be out Tuesday night or Wednesday, May 4.
